Steering Committee Meeting (October): Needs Assessment Results + Visioning

The International District Neighborhood Steering Committee held its second meeting on Monday, October 21st, at the Albuquerque Housing Authority. The primary objective was to review findings from the resident needs assessment survey and identify key themes for neighborhood revitalization.

The meeting engaged participants in identifying opportunities within the neighborhood, providing updates on the planning process, and highlighting key milestones. Discussions centered on pinpointing locations for early action projects and sharing insights from the resident needs assessment and recent community meeting. Participants also examined physical assets, challenges, and opportunities in the community and outlined next steps to move the planning process forward.

Topics of discussion included access to essential amenities like pharmacies, grocery stores, and clothing shops, along with issues surrounding vacant lots, safety, walkability, and environmental quality. Concerns were raised about access to and affordability of amenities, particularly for elderly residents and families with children.

Some neighborhood assets identified by participants were the International District Library and the cultural diversity of local businesses. In breakout groups, they suggested activating vacant lots through initiatives like pop-up food or farmers markets, as well as exploring uses for green spaces along San Mateo. Key feedback emphasized the importance of redeveloping vacant lots, improving access to amenities, and enhancing community safety. Suggestions included taking early actions to improve street intersections, revitalize abandoned sites, and create gathering spaces.

Participants also highlighted the need for safer, more accessible pedestrian pathways and the potential to enhance major intersections, such as those at San Mateo, Kathryn, and Central Avenue. Ideas also emerged around partnering with local organizations and encouraging community involvement in neighborhood transformation.

Thank you to everyone for a productive meeting and discussion. Next steps include launching working groups in November and December, with our next Community Meeting scheduled for January.
